Chapter 3 ❧ Were you dreaming

As soon as he looks up, he sees a black shadow sweep across the rooftop.

His expression turns serious, and he sprints after it in pursuit.

The shadow has also noticed him and seems to be mildly surprised, as it pauses in its tracks and almost falls under Gu Lang’s sword.

That person is wearing black from head to toe, even their face is covered, but for some reason, Gu Lang finds him familiar. He suddenly recalls the river lantern he had given to Sun Fang. Sun Fang had said that every river lantern needed writing on it and had stuffed a brush in his hand.

He had hesitated for a long time without knowing what to write. In the end, he had only left behind the two characters, “Murong.”

The man in black turns to run. Gu Lang darts in front of him and starts fighting. That person, however, doesn’t seem to want to fight. He ducks left and right and wants only to escape.

Gu Lang is right on his heels. Between every strike of his sword, he’s also reaching to grab at the black fabric on the man’s face. That person backs up again and again, narrowly dodging Gu Lang’s swiping hands.

But as he does so, he finds himself on the edge of the roof. The man in black slips and almost falls off. He hurriedly stabilizes himself, but when he looks up again, Gu Lang is already right in front of him. In the blink of an eye, Gu Lang rips off the fabric from his face.

Just as Gu Lang tugs off the fabric, and before he can take a good look at the face, that person quickly grabs hold of both of Gu Lang’s hands and presses Gu Lang down onto the roof, tucking his face into Gu Lang’s neck as he does so.

Gu Lang, “….” What kind of move is this?

Gu Lang’s hands and feet are both held down, so he trys to head butt the person but ends up bitten in the neck.

“Mmph… Let go!” Gu Lang is furious. He thrashes with both hands and feet and is about to wiggle free when he’s hit with a pebble-like object and passes out immediately.

When Gu Lang’s finally still, the person lying on top of him slowly raises his head. Shockingly, it’s the person whose grave Gu Lang has plucked grass from, Murong Yan.

An eunuch-looking person lands on the roof softly. With a benevolent smile, he says, “Do continue, your highness. This old servant did not see a thing.”

Murong Yan says with resignation, “Chen-gonggong1, you were enjoying the show for quite a while.”

(1. -Gonggong is the title for eunuchs.)

Chen-gonggong beams and says, “Please forgive me, your highness. This old servant’s age is getting up there, so it takes me some time to get around.”

Murong Yan is tired of this chit chat. He turns, scoops the unconscious Gu Lang into his arms, and asks, “Why was he on duty tonight?”

“His roommate Wu Liu was supposed to be on night duty,” Chen-gonggong says, “but Wu Liu got drunk during the day, so they switched….”

He’s not yet finished speaking when Murong Yan’s brows furrow. “Roommate? He lives with someone else?”

Chen-gonggong says, “… The East Palace guards all live two to a room.”

Murong Yan’s brows furrow deeper and deeper. Chen-gonggong rushes out, “This old servant will tell them to move that Wu Liu tomorrow.”

Murong Yan stands up with Gu Lang in his arms, “Where does he live?”

The next morning, Gu Lang startles awake but finds himself lying in bed like always.

His roommate Wu Liu is packing. Seeing that Gu Lang is awake, Wu Liu tells him excitedly that he is being transferred to the Imperial Study.

Gu Lang nods, then says with confusion, “How… did I get back here?”

“Huh? What?” Wu Liu is baffled. “Didn’t you come back yourself? You were already here when I woke up.”

Gu Lang says, “Did anything happen in the palace?”

Wu Liu says, “No, what could’ve happened?”

Gu Lang mutters, “But I saw a man in black near the crown prince’s bed chambers last night….”

Wu Liu is shocked. “Man in black? And then what happened?”

Gu Lang shakes his head lightly. “Someone sneaked up on me. I have no idea what happened after that.”

“But you’re fine now, lying here in one piece. I didn’t hear about anything happening in the palace either.” Wu Liu thinks for a second and says, “Were you maybe dreaming? I had a dream last night too. I dreamed that there was a nine-headed ghost holding my neck and strangling me. Scared me to death. Found out it was me strangling myself when I woke up….”

Neck? Gu Lang runs a hand over his neck and sure enough, he feels bite marks.

Right after that, Wu Liu sees Gu Lang walking off to wash his neck with a scowl.

After Wu Liu leaves, another guard moves into Gu Lang’s room.

That person’s face is average, but his eyes are full of life and really quite pretty.

“I’m Wu Liu’s older brother,” he tells Gu Lang, voice slightly husky. “I’m Wu Qi2.”

(2. Qi is 7. For those of you who forgot, Liu is 6, so Wu Liu is the 6th child. Wu Qi would be the 7th.)

Gu Lang, “….” Shouldn’t Wu Liu’s older brother be called Wu Wu or Wu Si3?

(3. Wu is 5, Si is 4.)
